This exciting new adventure will introduce our group to a local Mayan women's cooperative in Belize. This coop is developing services and crafts for the growing tourist industry. Explorations in Travel is coordinating with the local Peace Corp volunteer to create an exchange which will allow the women traveling with us to share their skills and expertise with the group in Belize. At the same time we look forward to learning about preparing typical local foods and creating the distinctive crafts developed by the Mayan women while we spend time in their village.
The group will begin their journey at Gayle's Point, a strip of land which is surrounded by water and home to groups of manatees. It is here that we will begin our orientation and have time to head out for a manatee watch. The local culture at Gayle's Point includes drummers and dancers. After traveling to our comfortable accommodations we will experience a night visit to the Belize Zoo, many of the residents are nocturnal. The zoo is considered to be among the best in the world, as it is home to indigenous animals of Belize, living in habitats appropriate for each species. A variety of Mayan ruins dot the landscape and we will have the opportunity to explore them.
After finishing up our project with the women's cooperative we'll travel to Caye Caulker and visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve for snorkeling on the world's second longest barrier reef.
The trip begins and
ends in Belize City.
