For years, centuries even,
people and sheep have kept warm wearing wool. The benefit
of wool, as opposed to cotton, is that it keeps you warm even
when it gets wet. It is an excellent choice when going out
into the elements whenever the temps may be in the 50's or
60's or lower. There are fantastic new blends and weaves which
are less scratchy then the sweaters you had to wear when you
were 10.
Polypro (fleece) is a fiber made from
a plastic resin. Like wool it will keep you warm even when
it gets wet. You can find it in every sporting goods store
and most of the large retail shops. It is generally lighter
than wool, dries faster and comes in a rainbow of colors.
You don't have to pay big bucks for a shirt made of polypro.
However if you plan on using it a lot, the higher quality (higher
priced) usually will last longer. Long underwear made of either
wool or polypro is a must for everyone who leaves their home
to go outside.
The choice is yours regarding
whether you wear wool or polypro. Remember cotton does not
keep you warm when you get wet (which you will when you sweat
or it rains). Maintaining your body temperature when you're
out hiking, canoeing or biking is very important. Don't skimp
on the warm layers!
