There are a variety of
boots available to hikers. Heavy weight boots are appropriate
for folks going on long hikes and carrying a heavy load. These
boots provide more stability and ankle support. They are typically
constructed of leather or plastic.
Light and medium weight boots
are most appropriate for the hiking we do on our adventures.
Boots may be constructed of leather, canvas or a fabric/leather
combination. Get high cut boots as opposed to low cut. The
extra bit of ankle support is a must and dirt and rocks get
into your shoes more easily with the low cuts.
Waterproof your boots unless
you're hiking in a desert. The best waterproofing is some
sort of wax that you rub into the boot (sno-seal, beeswax,
you'll find them where you buy your boots). The sprays won't
last long. If there's a chance it might be a wet trip, waterproof
your boots several times before your trip. You can waterproof
fabric boots as well as leather boots the same way.
Do not expose leather boots to
direct heat. The heat dries out the leather and causes the
seams to rip more easily. If they get soaked; take out the
insole and stuff the boots with newspaper and set them in
a warm, dry place.
Gore-tex boots are great and
some folks don't have any problems with wet feet when wearing
them. The Gore-tex laminate is suppose to prevent water from
coming into the book but allows water vapor (coming off your
sweaty feet) to escape. Sealing the leather on these boots
will prevent the vapor from escaping. But if the chance of
wet conditions exist where you'll be walking it 's a good
idea to waterproof them, especially around the seams where
the boot is attached to the sole.
Sneakers and running shoes
are great for city walking.
The new collection of sandals
that can get wet are a great addition for trips at the beach,
on a river, or anytime you might have the opportunity to swim.
Many folks find that with a pair of socks they are comfortable
enough for short walks on level terrain.
REMEMBER: Break in the boots,
not your feet!!
