It happened again. Summer morphed into autumn and I've been grudgingly forced to accept that long nights and days of lake swimming are over. For New Englanders we are gifted the lovely interlude of autumn before winter arrives. Walks in the woods this fall have included a bumper crop of berries; blackberries, huckleberries, giant purple raspberries and blueberries. The peaches have been juicy and the apples at roadside orchards are ready for picking.
I hope that you find something to enjoy in the weeks ahead!

Massachusetts Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program
It’s time to find a nice peak, a nice day, and binoculars to witness the annual fall raptor migration! Massachusetts has a number of decent sites that are easily accessible by car and by foot, and if you’re lucky you may even witness the massive movement of Broad-winged Hawks as they move en masse by the hundreds/thousands. With some stormy weather forecast for the end of the week and sunny days leading up to it, this week could be a great time to see some of the early movers. Ridgelines that run roughly N-S and coasts are preferred routes and the migration goes well into November, with different species and age classes moving at different times.

One of the best books on the subject is “Hawks in Flight” by Pete Dunne, David Sibley, and Clay Sutton, but there are lots of others to choose from as well.
