Here in Vermont summers are brief as is, but weeks of non-stop rain and cool evening temps have meant that the already limited open-water swim season is slipping away from me. I enjoy few things more than swimming in a lake. When I drive past a body of water, with diamonds of sunlight dancing on the surface I get the same feeling that often sweeps over me when I see a hot fudge sundae with peppermint stick ice cream!

One early evening as I swam in the pond that is my usual destination for warm weather swimming, a great blue heron flying low to the water passed within inches of my head, bobbing out of the water. The great prehistoric looking bird and I were eyeball to eyeball for the shadow of an instant. It was a moment that could not have been planned.

I am heading to the gym instead of the pond and it helps, got to get those endorphins wherever I can, but it's just not the same.

To Insure or Not Insure

Renting a car when you're away from home? Should you take out additional insurance that is offered by the car rental company? Before you leave home check with your own auto insurance company and the credit card company you'll be using to find out if you already have adequate insurance to cover you in the event of an accident or theft. More importantly find out what is NOT covered. If you're renting a car online, insurance may be offered to you. This is often a third party company, not the rental company from which you are getting the car from. Dealing with a claim is going to be more complicated should you opt for the third party offer. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has an informative website to help you think about what you need when it comes to rental insurance.

Got Your Passport?

Not only is a passport necessary for travel to locations outside the U.S. (and that list is growing) having your passport keeps identity thieves from getting it instead! Stolen ID info has been used to open passports, but it can't be done if a passport already exists in your name.
